Bullfinches must be leading contenders for the title of 'most handsome bird in the garden'. They were one of the first birds I painted and their good looks mean that they are forgiven for picking the buds from our apple trees every spring.
But what are they doing on the lawn?
We normally see them in the spring carefully removing the flower buds from our fruit trees. I don't think I have ever seen them feeding on the ground. Any ornithologists out there who could enlighten me?
